Timber Retaining Walls
Timber is the lowest-cost wall system we offer — and we'll tell you upfront where it makes sense on the Treasure Coast and where Florida's heat and humidity make it the wrong long-term choice.

The honest tradeoff
Pressure-treated timber costs less upfront than block, stone, or poured concrete, and it goes in fast. The tradeoff is lifespan: Florida's humidity, sandy moisture-holding soil in low spots, and termite pressure mean even pressure-treated timber typically lasts noticeably fewer years here than it would in a drier climate. We've replaced timber walls that started leaning or rotting at the base well before a comparable block wall would have needed attention.
We still build timber walls — it's the right tool for the right job — but we won't quote it for anything load-bearing, anything over roughly 2 feet, or anything you're hoping lasts 20+ years without maintenance. For those, segmental block costs more upfront but costs less over the life of the wall.
Where it makes sense
Garden bed borders, low terracing in a flower or vegetable bed, and small grade transitions where the wall is more landscaping than structure are all good timber candidates. It's also a reasonable choice for a homeowner who knows they'll be re-landscaping or replacing the wall within a decade anyway.
If you're not sure whether your project is a timber job or a block job, tell us the height and what's on either side of the wall when you request an estimate — we'll steer you to the right material rather than defaulting to whichever is easiest for us to install.
Low-lying yards in older, non-deed-restricted sections of Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce sometimes hold moisture at the base of a slope longer after a heavy rain than newer, better-graded lots do — that's exactly the condition that shortens a timber wall's life fastest. We'll flag it during the site visit if we see it.

How long does a timber retaining wall actually last in Florida?
It varies a lot by drainage and ground contact, but expect meaningfully less service life than block, stone, or poured concrete in this climate — ask us for a realistic estimate based on your specific site conditions rather than a generic number.
Will you talk me out of timber if it's not a good fit?
Yes. If your project is load-bearing, tall, or somewhere you want a 20+ year wall, we'll say so and recommend block or poured concrete instead.
Does a timber wall still need drainage behind it?
Yes — skipping drainage is what causes early rot and failure, timber or otherwise. See our drainage plan guide.
