What a segmental block wall actually is
Segmental retaining wall (SRW) block is manufactured concrete that interlocks course by course without mortar — each unit sits on the one below it, held in place by weight, friction, and often a lip or pin system built into the block itself. It's the wall system behind most of the terraced yards, raised beds, and slope corrections you'll see in newer Port St. Lucie neighborhoods.
The block is only part of the system. Behind every course we run compacted gravel backfill and, once a wall climbs past roughly 3–4 feet, horizontal geogrid mesh tied back into the soil for reinforcement. Skip the gravel and geogrid and you get a wall that looks fine on install day and leans within two rainy seasons — that shortcut is the single most common cause of the "failing block wall" calls we get.
Where it fits best
Segmental block is the right call for most residential slopes under about 4–5 feet: side-yard grade changes, terraced backyards, raised planting beds, and pool-deck retaining. It's also the wall type most Port St. Lucie HOA architectural review boards are already familiar with, which tends to make approval faster than a less-common material.
It's not the best fit for tall walls supporting a structure (a driveway, a pool deck edge, a house foundation), for walls right on a property line where an engineer wants a monolithic pour, or for waterfront lots where a homeowner specifically wants a natural stone look. We'll tell you upfront if your project is better suited to poured concrete or natural stone instead of trying to make block work where it's not the right tool.
Port St. Lucie's HOA-governed communities — Tradition and St. Lucie West among them — typically require architectural review board sign-off before any retaining wall goes in, including block color and cap style. We build to the most common ARB-approved block profiles in those communities, which shortens the approval back-and-forth.

Segmental block FAQs
How long does a segmental block wall last?
With proper gravel backfill and drainage behind it, a well-built segmental block wall commonly lasts 25+ years in this climate. Most of the block walls we're called out to repair failed early because drainage was skipped, not because the block itself wore out.
Can you match my HOA's approved block style?
Usually, yes — we'll ask for your community's ARB guidelines up front and quote block/cap combinations that match what's already been approved in your neighborhood where possible.
